Feasting on Asphalt: Episode Descriptions

EPISODE ONE:
“The South Shall Fry Again” – Airing July 29th, 9pm

Alton Brown and his team begin their cross-country venture on the East Coast on the Isle of Palms in South Carolina where he lays out the rules of the road and introducers viewers to his crew and fellow travelers.  With a rev of his motorcycle engine, the road warriors head to Jacks Cosmic Dogs in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, for hot dogs and insight into what makes a perfect roadside restaurant.  The next pit stop is the nearby Pitt Street Pharmacy for a chocolate shake, an egg salad sandwich and a quick lesson on the soda fountain’s place in road food history.  Other stops along the journey include: The Biscuit Place in Washington, Georgia, to for a real Southern breakfast and a lesson in authentic biscuit making, the Streamliner Diner, in Savannah, Georgia, and Shirley’s Soul Food Café in Toccoa, Georgia.  In addition, Alton swings by the Hobo Hollar, a vegetable stand off Hwy 11 in South Carolina, to taste watermelon and winds up the episode at the South 21 Drive In in Charlotte, North Carolina.

EPISODE TWO:
“I Smell Pork” – Airing August 5th, 9pm

The second episode of “Feasting on Asphalt” kicks off with pit-smoked pork BBQ at the Carolina Smokehouse in Cashiers, North Carolina.  From there Alton and his crew ride a sampling of the best motorcycle roads in the Smokey Mountains before stopping in at the Sanders Café Museum and Kentucky Fried Chicken in Corbin, Kentucky to examine the roots and legacy of Colonel Harlan Sanders.  Alton samples Monroe County BBQ at the Smokey Pig Bar and along the way, discovers that Duncan Hines is more than just a cake mix.  He and his crew enjoy pork brain sandwiches in Evansville, Indiana before wrapping up the episode with a late night dash to Ted Drewe’s in St. Louis, Missouri for “concretes,” milkshakes so thick they can be turned upside down and not budge an inch.

EPISODE THREE:
“High Plains Feaster” – Airing August 12th, 9pm

After a quick RV breakfast, Alton and company pay a visit the site of the 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair where he speaks with food historian Pam Vaccarro about the Fair’s food facts and fictions. Next up is the small town of Florence, Kansas for history lesson at the Harvey House Museum and taste testing at Spring Fling Fundraiser.  After Alton’s motorcycle tank runs dry, he spends the night alone in East Colorado but the crew meets up later to dine on steaks and beer at the Mexican Hat Lodge in Utah.

EPISODE FOUR:
“California or Bust” – Airing August 19th, 9pm

In Colorado, Alton cooks fry bread and mutton with a Navajo family to celebrate the birth of their son’s baby.  When he hits the road again, Alton’s motorcycle takes a fall in heavy gravel outside Las Vegas and he is forced to substitute road food for hospital food.  Bruised but undaunted, he continues his journal to the west coast in the back of a rented SUV, cooking pea and ham soup in his 12 volt crock pot.  Alton spends the night in a Wigwam in Rialto, California and then talks road food with those who know it best, long distance truckers.  The episode wraps up with a movable feast through the streets of Los Angeles and visit to the Taco Cart Wagon near the Hawthorne Police Station.
